The VM page and console

The Virtual Machines list, a VM's tabs, and the browser console (noVNC, SSH and RDP).

The Virtual Machines list

  • Columns include status, VM ID, name, OS, owner, IP, vCPU, RAM, live CPU and memory bars, uptime and tags. Bars turn amber above 60% and red above 80%.
  • Search covers name, OS, IP, tags and owner; filters cover status, OS family, owner, cluster and tags, each with counts. Every column sorts.
  • Hovering a row briefly shows a preview with live load, specs, host, owner, snapshot count and last backup.
  • The owner cell can be edited in place (vm.owner.change); tags can be edited from the Tags cell (vm.edit.resources).
  • Without vm.view.all the list shows only VMs you own.

The VM page

The header shows the name, a live status dot, OS, cluster, host, IP and tags, plus the power and console controls. Each tab has its own URL; a link to a tab you are not allowed to see falls back to Overview.

TabContents
OverviewResources with Edit, live load, details (owner, host, workload and more), an activity calendar and 30-day usage charts
SnapshotsThe VM's snapshot tree with create, restore and delete (snapshot.view)
BackupsDay-grouped backup browser with table and calendar views (backup.view)
NetworkNICs with model, MAC, network, VLAN, IP and live traffic (network.view)
FirewallThe VM's guest firewall (network.view; editing needs network.firewall)
Metrics30-day utilization, backup and operations analytics
ResourcesCurrent sizing and the resize dialog
ManagementRemote commands and the guest's scheduled tasks (vm.remote.exec)
StorageOn-demand disk-usage scan (vm.view)
DatabaseOnly for database servers: schema, ER diagram, data and SQL (vm.db.view)
ActivityThe audit log for this VM, including remote-command output

While a VM is provisioning, or while a configuration run has locked it, the tabs are replaced by the live run view and all controls are disabled.

Browser console (noVNC)

  • Needs vm.console; opening a console is recorded in Activity.
  • Your browser only talks to the portal. The portal relays to the hypervisor with a one-time password per connection, so retrying is always safe.
  • Because it does not use the guest's network, the console works even when the guest's network or firewall is broken.
  • Status: Connecting, Connected, Disconnected, Unavailable or Error, with Retry on failure. Unavailable means the VM has no live Proxmox guest or its cluster is unreachable.
  • The picture scales without stretching; fullscreen is available.

Keyboard, macros and clipboard

  • A movable dock sends key combinations such as Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Alt+Tab, Alt+F4, the Windows key, Escape, Print Screen and Ctrl+Alt+F1/F2/F7.
  • Paste from clipboard types your browser clipboard into the guest (the browser asks for permission).
  • An on-screen keyboard helps when host and guest keyboard layouts disagree.

SSH terminal and RDP

  • For Linux VMs the console menu offers an SSH terminal in the browser. You enter the username and password each time; the host is the VM's IP. It needs vm.console.
  • The console menu can also download an RDP file for connecting with a desktop client.
